What properties are unique to bathroom tiles?

Bathroom tiles require a number of unique features to make them suitable for hot and wet indoor environments. Firstly, bathroom tiles are most commonly made from durable materials such as ceramic and porcelain, which are known for their strength and longevity.

Our bathroom tiles are also highly water resistant in order to withstand steam and moisture on both floors and walls, meaning the buildup of mould and grime is kept to a minimum. Bathroom tiles are also very low maintenance, as they can be easily wiped clean without the need for specialist or costly cleaning methods.

A certain level of slip-resistance is also essential for bathroom tiles, particularly bathroom floor tiles, to decrease the likelihood of injuries when walking on wet surfaces. Many of our bathroom tiles are supplied with an R-rating to indicate their slip resistance.

What are R-Ratings?

R-ratings are given to floor tiles to indicate their level of slip-resistance. The higher the rating, the more slip-resistant the tile is. The term R-rating gets its name from a test in which tiles are placed on an inclined surface and someone walks up the ramp on both dry and oiled versions. Our bathroom tiles come stocked in R9, R10, R11 and R12 ratings.

Can I use bathroom tiles on my walls and floors?

Some of our bathroom tiles can be used on both walls and floors, but some can only be used for each application. This is because if a certain tile has little to no slip resistance, it is not recommended for use on floors that often get wet. Some bathroom tiles specifically designed for walls have better water runoff and tend to have more gloss and polished options.
